A bride and groom embrace after just seeing each other for the first time on their wedding day on the rooftop of the Andaz Hotel in NYC. The 360 views offer a glimpse of all of Lower Manhattan, the East River and Brooklyn. The hotel feature 253 loft style rooms in the heart of the financial district and can host intimate weddings on the terrace and room on the rooftop. (like this wedding I did there)
When deciding on a location for a first look, there are several things to consider. As a New York City wedding photographer, I'm first going to think about the background and the lighting. Often the time of day is not ideal for the best light, be there is still much a photographer can do to maximize the light he/she has to work with. In this photo, the couple wanted to do the first look on the rooftop. Luckily I had been there before and knew the layout (otherwise I'd use Google maps to see the layout and arrive early. But this day, it was actually inaccessible due to an elevator issue before and we had to climb 3 flights of stairs to get there.)
However, I knew where I wanted them to stand for the background (capture the buildings) and also wanted the light behind them. When we got up there, the spot I wanted was full of sun bathers! So this spot was actually my second choice but it worked out just fine. Another thing to consider, I also like it to be as private as possible. The less people the better. When they walk down the aisle that is such a public moment, this one can be private.
